Put your hand up if you pay a monthly gym subscription and haven’t seen the inside of a changing room in months? Have you openly swore blind you won’t touch another piece of cake all year, and then in the same breath, found yourself scoffing an entire cheese cake? Confession, our hands are firmly raised too! So this is us begging the question; Do we put too much expectation on ourselves to perform? Is living a healthy lifestyle really that important?
The most prominent scripture that comes to mind is from 1 Corinthians 6:19-20;
“Do you know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honour God with your body.”
This doesn’t necessarily mean that eating cake is dishonouring to God (unless eating cake is an issue) what we take from this verse is the reminder to appreciate the price that was paid for us to have eternal life, this is vitally important! In turn it would make sense that such practice would help us adopt the desire to be healthier in mind, body and spirit.
“1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
