Matthew 17:14-20 (ERV)

Jesus frees a Boy from an Evil Spirit

14 Jesus and the followers went back to the people. A man came to Jesus and bowed before him. 15 The man said, “Lord, be kind to my son. He suffers so much from the seizures he has. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16 I brought him to your followers, but they could not heal him.”17 Jesus answered, “You people today have no faith. Your lives are so wrong! How long must I stay with you? How long must I continue to be patient with you? Bring the boy here.” 18 Jesus gave a strong command to the demon inside the boy. The demon came out of the boy, and the boy was healed. 19 Then the followers came to Jesus alone. They said, “We tried to force the demon out of the boy, but we could not. Why were we not able to make the demon go out?”20 Jesus answered, “You were not able to make the demon go out, because your faith is too small. Believe me when I tell you, if your faith is only as big as a mustard seed you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. You will be able to do anything.”

Jesus answered, “You were not able to make the demon go out, because your faith is too small. Believe me when I tell you, if your faith is only as big as a mustard seed you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. You will be able to do anything.”

Although not the smallest seed in the word, the mustard seed is very small (averaging around 1-2 millimetres). That said, don’t doubt this seed by its size alone, it is a heavily favored seed for production in the U.K. and it is high in oils and proteins – The seed is said to have some great health benefits too. Apparently mustard seeds have inhabiting qualities that can reduce the production of cancer cells, it is an anti-inflammatory and can help with Asthma, and it’s said the seed can be used to help aid the decrees of symptoms in Rheumatiod Athritis. Who would of thought a seed that size could do all that?
The Bible mentions a few times, that we, when acompanied with the power of God, can do all things – It is he that strengthens us. The above passage really challenges the every day Christian, if it only takes faith the size of a Mustard Seed to move a Mountain, then why aren’t we moving mountains anytime soon? You can move mountains – as can we – it just takes a wholehearted belief that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. So, next time you are met with a challenge, remember – if faith the size of that small seed moves mountains, then step up and go and move some with God.
